Your Anxiety Might Not Be Emotional… It Might Be Your Blood Sugar

Have you ever felt shaky, irritable, overwhelmed, or suddenly on edge and wondered why?

Sometimes, what feels like anxiety may have a physical component. Blood sugar fluctuations can contribute to symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, and feeling uneasy. These sensations can sometimes overlap with what we experience as anxiety.

Going long periods without eating or eating meals that don't provide enough nourishment may contribute to blood sugar fluctuations for some people. Paying attention to patterns in your meals, energy, and mood can help you better understand what your body may be communicating.

This doesn't mean all anxiety is caused by blood sugar. Anxiety is complex, and emotional, psychological, and physical factors can all play a role. Persistent or concerning symptoms deserve appropriate medical attention.

The important thing is to remember that your mental and physical well-being are connected. Instead of judging yourself for how you're feeling, get curious about what might be contributing to it.

Sometimes, caring for your mind also means paying attention to your body.

At Heal the Energy Coaching, we explore the connection between mind, body, and everyday wellness to help women become more aware of their needs and build sustainable self-care practices.

Mood and Blood Sugar

Have you ever skipped breakfast or gone too long without eating and noticed that you're suddenly irritable, anxious, shaky, or having trouble concentrating?

There's a reason to pay attention to that connection.

When blood sugar drops too low, your body can release stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, to help bring it back up. This response can cause physical sensations such as shakiness, a racing heart, and feeling on edge. These sensations can sometimes resemble anxiety, while fluctuations in blood sugar and inconsistent nourishment may also affect your energy and concentration.

For some women, especially those juggling work, family, and everyone else's needs, eating regularly can become an afterthought. You push through the morning, grab whatever is available, or realize at lunchtime that you've barely eaten.

But your body needs nourishment to function well.

A few simple things to consider:

  • Try not to make skipping breakfast or regularly going long periods without food a habit if you notice it affects how you feel.
  • Aim for balanced meals that include protein, fiber-rich carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
  • Pay attention to patterns in your eating, energy, mood, and concentration.

This doesn't mean that anxiety is always caused by blood sugar. Anxiety has many contributing factors, and persistent symptoms deserve appropriate attention. But it reminds us that emotional well-being and physical health are connected.

At Heal the Energy Coaching, I encourage women to look at the whole picture. Sometimes, caring for your mental wellness also means paying attention to how you're nourishing your body.

Your body isn't working against you. It's worth listening to what it's telling you.

You May Not be Unmotivated

Have you ever blamed yourself for not being consistent? Maybe you struggle to follow through on your plans, find yourself putting things off, or simply don't have the energy to do the things you know you want to do.

It's easy to label yourself as lazy or assume you lack discipline. But what if there's more to the story?

When you're under ongoing stress, managing multiple responsibilities, or feeling emotionally overwhelmed, your capacity to plan, focus, and take action can become more difficult. Stress and exhaustion can affect your concentration, energy, and motivation.

Sometimes, what looks like a lack of motivation is a sign that you need to pause and pay attention to what you're experiencing.

It's worth asking yourself: Am I being unmotivated, or am I running on empty?

Instead of responding to yourself with criticism, try approaching yourself with curiosity.

  • Check in with your body. Are you getting enough rest, nourishment, and time to recharge?
  • Notice your emotional load. Are you carrying responsibilities that leave little room for your own needs?
  • Start smaller. Rather than expecting yourself to do everything at once, choose one manageable next step.
  • Give yourself permission to pause. Rest and recovery are part of caring for yourself, not rewards you have to earn.

Of course, persistent exhaustion or a significant change in motivation can have many causes, including physical or mental health concerns. You don't have to figure everything out on your own.

At Heal the Energy Coaching, I believe caring for your well-being means looking at the whole picture: mind, body, and soul.

You don't need more shame. You deserve support, understanding, and practical ways to care for yourself.

Your next step doesn't have to be pushing harder. It can be learning what you need.
